Francine Lalonde

September 30, 2009

Francine Lalonde is the Member of Parliament for La Pointe-de-l’Île, Québec.  She is a member of the Bloc Québécois, and this will be her 6th term in Parliament.

She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs and International Development committee.  She is also a member of the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan.

She holds a degree in history from the University of Montreal, and also a degree in educational psychology.  She taught history and latin as a teacher, but then moved into administration roles.  Her most notable role was with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (Confederation of National Trade Unions), of which she was coordinator and Vice-President.

In 2005 she tabled Bill C-407: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (right to die with dignity). The bill sought to amend, “the Criminal Code to allow any person, under certain conditions, to aid a person close to death or suffering from a debilitating illness to die with dignity if the person has expressed the free and informed wish to die. It proved to be an extremely controversial bill and therefore did not pass in the House.  Since 2005 she has further introduced bills for the purpose of legalizing assisted suicide.

She is currently battling cancer.

As we pray for her, let’s ask that God would bring His Life into her life.  Pray that there would be healing where cancerous cells have caused damage.  Pray that she would experience a total healing.  Pray that she would yearn to live well and not focus on dying well.  Pray that she would continue to have the strength and courage to continue the demanding job of being a Member of Parliament.

“I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”
